Pizza On The Grill

Kristin and I have a little saying called “breathing the dust” — and by this I don’t mean flour dust…I mean more like pixie dust.  Dust that when you breathe it in, makes you dream crazy things.  Dust that makes you believe crazy things.  Dust that makes you do crazy things.  Things you barely have time to do because the laundry is piling up, and you drive in your van running kids all day long.

This dust makes you dream things you are technologically underdeveloped to do.  But, you do it anyway.  But, sometimes it makes you want to whack things.

Occasionally, you just want to toss your dream away.

You feel like your brain has been flattened out, your feet in the fire.

But, then something like a good idea, falls from above.

Again, things look greener, more beautiful.

And, definitely better when divided and shared.

Grilled Pizza Recipe

1 pizza dough from Trader Joes (or make your own…I use to, but found it just as good and easier to buy)

Assortment of Ingredients:

Sundried tomatoes

Oven roasted tomatoes

Fresh tomatoes

Arugula

Fresh basil

Fresh Mozzarella

Parmigiano Reggiano

Raw Onions

Caramelized Onions

Mushrooms

Roasted Red Peppers

Artichoke Hearts

Olives

Pizza sauce

Garlic cream sauce

Italian Sausage (pre cooked)

Marinated Flank Steak (pre grilled)

These are some of our favorites…but there are so many more to use!

1. Fire up the grill, get it good and hot.

2. Roll out and slap out, Trader Joe’s Pizza Dough to desired size.

3. Have all your ingredients handy right by the grill.

4. Place dough on oiled grill for 3-5 minutes.

5. Flip the dough, add the ingredients you want on top, close the lid to your grill and cook another 3-5 minutes.

6. Pull pizza off the grill and slice.

Sometimes for dinner parties, we cut dough into thirds, give every guest their own pizza dough, they go down an assembly line picking out their ingredients and stand next to the grill man (or lady) to help make their own individual. This is a huge crowd pleaser!

I guess “poetry dust” effects me this way! Reading and/or writing poetry happily steals away my time from the “have to’s” of life and makes deep deposits in my reservoirs of joy. (Of course, it’s not quite the same satisfaction one gets from eating homemade pizza on the barbie with friends, but then, food is a whole different language…)

Okay, so given the responses here, I may be slightly off topic but, I’ve been making pizza from scratch for some 25 odd years now. It’s been a dream of mine to own a wood fired oven. In my mind, and to my taste buds, there’s no better pizza than one from a wood fired oven. Alas, having a kitchen with a wood fired oven is only what dreams or the lottery are made of. However, for the past year or so I’ve thought of grilling pizza and thanks to a friend sending me a link to this post and seeing the pictures convinced me to give it a try. But, dough is king and yours looks perfect for grilling. Is there any likelyhood you would share your dough recipe? Thanks for the great post and inspiration. I’m all fired up!

Ahhh…the dough secret, well you see, it may cost! $1.00 that is! We bought this said dough at Trader Joes! I know, I know…totally cheated and probably let you down…I have, however, made it in the past and grilled it. (This night we were had a time crunch.) It worked beautifully. I have often thought that a grilled pizza joint would rock! I say go for it! Your profit margin would be good on grilled pizza. Fresh ingredients really make them delicious. We’ve done homemade pestos, artichoke tapanades, oven roasted tomatos, fresh mozz, smoked gouda…the list goes on! Let us know how it works out! Trader Joe dough is not bad for research purposes! Easy and cheap.
    Fire it up brotha!!
