Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!
My mom always made Ethel’s cookies and so did I until I lost my recipe card 🙁
Since then, I have tried other sugar cookie recipes, but none were quite the same as Ethel’s.
Putting this recipe online has brought joy to my Christmas season!!!!!!

This recipe has been a three generation favorite in my family as well. I searched it online because my 1961 version of Betty Crocker Picture Cookbook is barely holding together. It too easily falls open to the cookie section, and also has penciled in measurements for double and triple batches. And alas, poor Mary, her cookies just can’t compare.

I remember using Aunt Ethel’s Sugar Cookie recipe from the Betty Crocker Cook Book that I got as a wedding present in 1965…I made the unfortunate mistake of throwing the cook book away when it totally fell apart…it was in a three ring binder with a red checkerboard cover…and was never able to replace it…all of her later cook books leaned toward “healthy food” and I guess the sugar cookies where not healthy so the recipe was left out….but…thank goodness for the internet…I knew I would find the original recipe there! Thanks You!!!!

These cookies were yummy but the dough was too soft for cut outs. I chilled the dough for a couple of hours but even after rolling them out in the flour/powdered sugar, the dough was very soft and sticky. I make sugar cookies every year at Christmas with various different recipes and have never had a problem. Not sure what went wrong with this one. Oh well, the cookies were ugly but at least they tasted good.

I use this recipe to make the most delicious filled cookies.
Roll the dough and cut with a round cutter or glass, the size you want.
Fill with your favourite filling. My family loves a raisin filling similar to a tart filling.
Top with a second round cut out. Press edges down slightly and bake the same way as
the single cookie recipe. The cookies are amazing. Family tradition. Bake dozens every
Christmas. This is a must try.

I LOVE this sugar cookie! I have tried others over the years, but always come back to this recipe. I use these for any and every holiday out there: Christmas, Hanukkah, Valentine’sDay, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter. You name it, I’ve got a cookie cutter for. It! Even the tried and true round. Copied this out of my mom’s 1961 version of the Betty Crocker Cookie Book.
