Preparing for Christmas by hanging stockings, is a century old tradition. There are many stories around how this tradition was started, but they all point back to St. Nicholas. Children began to leave stockings and shoes by the chimney with hopes that little goodies would be left by St. Nick, a man known for his care of the poor.
When the stockings come out of the Christmas boxes…well, this is when I get a little giddy! This is the moment I know that Christmas is here!
Usually I save unwrapping them to the very end…after the tree is decorated. About three years ago, I decided to make new stockings for each of my kids by hand. This year, for our homeschool art co-op class, I taught the kids to make them!
Their imaginations and ideas, sparked the Christmas spirit!
When Christmas morning comes, my kids save opening their stockings for last. It’s their favorite part of the morning! There is something about discovering little surprises and gifts tucked in the corners of the stocking!
We’d love to see your stockings and hear your family tradition around hanging them! What makes them special? What will you fill them with?
