Snorkeling In Puerto Morelos

While on our latest trip to Mexico, we took a day trip to the tiny quiet fishing village of Puerto Morelos.  This was one of my favorite day trips I have been on.  Puerto Morelos is the perfect blend of enjoying the outdoors, beautiful beach views, leisurely strolls and relaxing.

Puerto Morelos is located between Cancun (about 25 minutes from) and Playa del Carmen.  The reef at Puerto Morelos is part of the 2nd largest reef system in the world and is a National Marine Park.   There are a few places that will take you snorkeling in Puerto Morelos.  I’m not sure who we used.  We just walked up to a place across the street from the playground, right off the plaza in the town center and they took us out.  It was some of the best snorkeling I have experience (including Hawaii).  We saw barracuda, flounder, manta rays, conch and sea anemones.

Turns out I was the only girl on the boat.  Or as my husband and his colleagues stated “THE girl”.  It was not lost on me that I would be protected in this group.  They were thankfully all bigger than me and I felt reassured that if there were any sharks out there in the reef, they would get the first bite.

We worked up an appetite and after an open air public shower rinse off we headed to a restaurant on the town square for lunch.

After lunch we strolled the street for some shopping.  The souvenir prices in Puerto Morelos were less expensive than Cancun or Playa del Carmen and there was a nice variety of art, crafts, blankets and jewelry.

Puerto Morelos is the perfect fit if you are looking for a place to slide into some flippers.
